Types of Pilates

There are two main types of Pilates: Fitness Pilates that is geared to athletes and those wishing to improve strength and increase stamina, and Rehabilitation Pilates that focuses on repairing the damage incurred through injury or muscle strain.

There are two types of Pilates classes: those with a focus on mat work, concentrating on the original core exercises, and more intensive equipment based sessions. The equipment is used to provide support and exercise different areas of the body than those involved in basic mat work. It is recommended that mat work is mastered prior to using the equipment, to ensure basic core strength has been developed.

Over the years, Joseph Hubertus Pilates' successors have adapted his original regime and it continues to evolve as instructors are informed by other disciplines. The variety of types of Pilates currently on the market ensures that with trial and error, you are sure to find an instructor whose method is right for you. If you are new to this particular exercise, it is recommended that you develop your core-strength by commencing with classes concentrating on mat work and then gradually progressing to more difficult regimes. The speed of your progress is dependant on your level of fitness, your ability to grasp new concepts, the regularity with which you practice the routines, and how committed you are to pursuing your training. Once you have successfully completed the exercises at one level, and are no longer feeling challenged, it is a good time to enrol in a more advanced class.
