Yoga
Yoga is a holistic approach to exercise that has been used for over 5000 years as an alternative medicine. The practice is rooted in postures, meditation and breathing.
Though know one is certain when or where yoga began, documents dating back to2,700 BC depict figures seated in yogic positions. Centuries ago Hindu yogis developed a series of postures that in combination with breathing techniques promoted correct body alignment, allowing them to sit in meditation for long periods of time. Yoga has since been embraced by the modern Western world for its combined benefits to the body and mind. Today, those same postures are often practised to combat the negative effects associated with sitting at a computer for countless hours in a day.
The
philosophy behind yoga embraces the notion that a sense of well-being can only be achieved by the holistic approach of exercising both the mind and the body. This
inclusive approach to fitness aids digestion, relieves stress, and strengthens the body.
It is not surprising then that those committed to other forms of fitness, often compliment their existing regimens with yogic postures and breathing techniques. One of the
unique benefits of this approach to exercise is the welcome respite it provides from the everyday distractions of the outside world. A mindful practice that takes stock of how the body feels when it is at rest and within each of the postures is encouraged at all times. With regular practice this sense of well-being can be achieved beyond a formal setting and become a part of daily living.
